Here's a bizarre one... a friend of mine recently started working at
a Macintosh dealer. Being the hardware junkie that he is, he went
through all the store's old stock in the backroom and dug up some Apple
II cards, as well as a Lisa with 8 megs of RAM (amazingly, it boots
System 7.1!!!). The real kicker is a Howtek "PixelMaster" colour
printer! It stands about four feet tall and looks like a squared-off
version of an R2 unit without the wheels. ;-) The paper is fed in
through the side and the output tray is on the front. The top has a
plastic lid which gives access to what appears to be a drum housing the
paper path. In the middle are four ink wells (CMYK). Under the lid are
some brief instructions on operating the front panel (a bunch of LED's,
a numeric keypad and a two-digit LED display). It claims to have
LaserJet and HPGL compatibility. It also has a parallel port and what
appears to be an RS-422 serial port. My friend wants to connect it to
his //e or //c (the printer is at his place now).
The question: Does anyone know *anything* about Howtek printers?
This one looks like it could produce some very nice quality colour ink
printouts. Can someone suggest a newsgroup I could post to?
alt.folklore.computers, maybe? ;-)
