grind.isca.uiowa.edu

What is one supposed to say when presented with:

Connected to grind.isca.uiowa.edu (tcp!192.20.239.131!3721).
220 grind.isca.uiowa.edu FTP server (Version wu-2.1c(36) Sat Nov 6
19:02:53 CST 1993) ready.
Name (grind.isca.uiowa.edu:bird):

I've replied: guest and anonymous. Both have resulted in:

500 'USER ': command not understood.
Login failed.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp>

I then responded with:
ftp> bye

Which got my home system prompt back. Next I tried:

ftp> ls
200 PORT command successful.

The ls 'worked,' however, nothing showed up on my screen and was
immediately followed by:
530 Please login with USER and PASS.

So I once again typed:
ftp> bye

and got my home prompt.

All help is appreciated.

Kind Regards,
