You should be able to put the SCSI card into slot 1.  Some cards
cannot be used in slot 1 if you have AppleTalk enabled (particularly
serial and parallel cards) but a SCSI card should be OK.

[This is because the AppleTalk firmware uses slot 1's "screen holes" -
memory locations which are reserved for use by a card in slot 1; I
don't think these locations are used by SCSI cards.]

Yes, you would.  Slot 1 is a much better option.  What's more, if you
leave your startup slot set to '6' or 'Scan', then the computer will
attempt to boot the 5.25" drive, then the 3.5" drive and then the hard
drive (just like a Mac, a PC, or my IIgs!)

If you don't want to boot from the 5.25" drive, set the startup slot
to 5, so you can still boot the 3.5" drive if you want to.


If you eventually need another slot, my next suggestion would be to
put the card in slot 6, and only use your 5.25" drives on rare
occasions.
