Spectrum (and Seven Hills) is an unproven player in the Apple II
communications market. Proterm is the king of the hill. This strategy
will encourage Proterm users to try out Spectrum and hopefully switch
over. This was done even back when I bought DeluxePaint II six years
ago. Many of the large software companies (Lotus, WordPerfect, Aldus,
Claris) offer similar deals. They are not in it to make a killing, but
to gain market exposure. Why do you think Claris gave away a free copy
of ClarisWorks with every Mac? It established their presence and gave
them the opportunity to charge a $129 upgrade fee a year later. ;-)
