Use Finder to initialize or erase the hard drive, and choose the HFS
file system instead of ProDOS. HFS supports volume sizes larger than
32 megabytes (the trade-off is larger allocation block sizes).

The ProDOS file system does not support partitions larger than 32
megabytes. Period.

If you initialize a 40MB hard drive as a single ProDOS partition, you
will only be able to access 32MB of the drive. The other 8MB will not
be accessable.

Why do you want to avoid partitioning the drive, anyway?
