Re: CD-Rom for Apple II & IIGS

to begin with - the mechanism for the IIe and the IIGS is the same as
that for the Mac.. SCSI. It it works on a Mac, it will work o the GS
and IIe - IF you have drivers for it.

I belive the IIe would require the RAMfast SCSI card, where the IIGS
canuse any SCSI card because the drivers are in software.

There are tons of Mac/IBM disks out there.. but darn few for the II..
one was put out in '89 called GEM - full of shareware, freeware, and
demos. Other than that, the only disks we can actually USE are the ones
that come with the Apple magazine 'develop".

We can make use of disks pressed for the Mac/IBM if all we want are teh
text files or graphic images on them. Some tinkering can usually bring
these files into II-land for readability. Unfortunately, we cannot
actually use the software on those disks. (Even teh PCTransporter from
AE doesn't recognize the CD-ROM - a complaint I write to them about
almost every month)

There is talk of a regular disk from the Apple II software archive at
grind... if this comes to be, I'd say that a CD-ROM would be a GREAT
idea for individuals and user groups alike. Until such time, most
will find that the user group has more need - since the disks included
with the 'develop' magazine contain all the latest tech notes.
