As for someone else's comment that the sales of the GEM CD-ROM exceeded our
"wildest expectations": no way. 200 of the discs were pressed, and the stock
that InterChange is selling is still from that original batch. Hardly "wild"
sales, IMHO.

I've been looking into the current releases of CD-ROM mastering hardware and
software, and Pinnacle Micro's offerings seem reasonable: $4000. Much cheaper
than anything that was available four years ago. So if anyone's planning to
create their own CD-ROMS, the price is affordable, assuming that you can sell
enough of the finished product.

One problem, though. The original GEM disc was one-offed by a helpful source
at Apple Computer, as no one else seemed to know how to put ProDOS partitions
on a CD-ROM. With this new hardware/software, only Macintosh HFS format or ISO
9660 discs are possible. So if you're hoping to mount a self-made CD-ROM on
your IIgs, forget having ProDOS partitions. But then, CD-ROMs are an archive
medium, and I don't see a problem. (Every file stored as ShrinkIt archives,
perhaps?)
