Are you talking about AppleWORKS or AppleWRITER?  The latest version of
AppleWORKS (released by Claris) is verison 3.0 (there are some bug-fix
patches for this, too).  I believe Quality Computers now sells what you
might call "AppleWorks 4.0", but I believe it's called something
different.  This latest incarnation has "TimeOut UltraMacros" (now
"Ultra 4.x") built-in, along with some other nicities (like AppleWorks
inits and built-in TimeOut ability built-in).

In general, there were a lot of bug fixes between 1.x and 2.x of
AppleWorks, and between version 2.x and 3.x there was a LOT of
functionality added (and a few bugs introduced).

But as far as AppleWriter goes, I don't really know that much about its
various versions.
