    Assuming 80 bytes per file and 10000 files (let's use Andre
Prellewitz's model), that would give you an 800K index.  Not bad for
that many files.  Compressing it would shrink it down to less than half
that.  Perhaps there could be a separate "index-recent" file with just
that month's uploads.  When the next month comes around, it will be
appended to the cumulative index.
