Version 3.0 of MuGS is basically complete except for the
documentation. Rather than continually putting it off, I've decided
to release it in its current state as beta version 3.0d29 (without the
full documentation) and field comments and bug reports. Obviously, it
works fine on my setup, but I've probably made a few assumptions which
don't hold on someone else's system. That's why I want to distribute
it ASAP and get some feedback.
I will include some brief documentation with the beta release,
but it will in no way cover all of MuGS' features. For those of you
who have never heard of MuGS, it is a MicroEMACS-based offline news
and mail system for GNO. MicroEMACS 3.11c itself does not require
GNO, so MuGS will probably work without GNO, but it has not been
tested in that configuration. If you want to try it from ORCA or even
from the Finder, you are on your own for now! MuGS is *not* a QWK
reader. The QWK format was not designed to handle Internet-style
messages. MuGS is currently the only GS-specific software available
for gathering, reading, replying and archiving Internet e-mail and
Usenet news.
The UNIX utility for creating your news packet represents my
first substantial C program (ack!). I would appreciate any and all
comments about proper coding techniques, style advice, outright
mistakes, etc. Again, it compiles fine on my UNIX system, but it may
not be generic enough to work on other systems with different C
compilers.
One last thing... MuGS currently does not support NNTP for news,
so you must have a local news system (e.g, in /usr/spool/news) on the
UNIX system. Otherwise MuGS will collect only your e-mail.
Below is a revision list detailing the changes from 2.0 (the last
widely released version) and 3.0d29. Although I won't add any new
features to 3.0, I welcome suggestions for future versions. Please
contact me at taob@io.org or 90taobri@wave.scar.utoronto.ca Thanks.
