Re: What to do with my old //c ?

Your first question really should be: Where can I get a cheap second
disk drive?

In answer to that I would respond - look around the pawn shops in
your area and look for exchange type places or used computer type
places. I have found a store here in Houston where they are
selling 3.5" disk drives for $99.00. They are Apple Computer 3.5"
beige and platinum disk drives. :)

THEN you can ask the other questions. Why? Because working with a
single disk drive IS THE PITS! Especially if it is the old 5.25"
//c type of computer. I've got one - I KNOW how hard it is to work
with that! :)

1. Hyper C is good. Astec C is good. But both require quite a bit
of disk space. If you have the 5.25" drive you won't be able to
use either of them. In fact, there isn't a C compiler which will
work on a //c if you only have a 5.25" disk drive. There just
isn't enough space for the compiler and the linker and the object
files and the libraries and your code. If you have a //c with the
3.5" disk drive, then you should be able to get by. But two drives
   are still better. :)

2. What you want is what is called a "NULL MODEM CABLE". This basically
means an rs-232c cable where the pins (usually 2 & 4) have not been
reversed. You would plug this into the rs-232c outlet (the serial
port) on your IBM and into the same port on the //c. OR! If you want
to spend some bucks, you go buy a null modem cable made for the //c
and you plug it into the modem port on the //c. Then you need a
modem program for both the IBM and the //c. Bring them both up, tell
them to go off-hook, and have fun.

Later dude! :)
