If your CAPS letters look okay and the lowercase letters (and in fact all
unshifted characters) look like garbage, then it's not the monitor, it's your
display circuit.  I had the same thing happen, but ONLY to main memory video
characters (80 columns alternates aux/main/aux/main/etc).  I ended up finding
a bad solder joint on the main memory 80column latch chip.  While I wouldn't
expect most people to be able to board level troubleshoot, this is an example
of what can go wrong.  If you don't want to disassemble your //c, you can
buy a new logic board for $99 from most mail order parts houses.
