Actually there are many parallel cards for the Apple II.

Conversely, I have an Epson APL card and FX-85. The APL card works fine
from Basic, PrintShop, etc., but produces absolutely no printer movement
whatsoever from appleworks. appleworks pauses about the correct amount of
time for printing, then returns to normal status. Obviously we must have
different ROM versions, but I have to believe what the first poster said is
true. You can't print from appleworks with (some) Epson APL cards!
