Well, it makes the system stop crashing, which is the current goal. :-)
For those who don't know, the SANE toolset was referencing uninitialized
data. The Seven Hills patch just zeros out SANE's direct page, effectively
initializing it.
Much better to use a system without the bug than this workaround (which
may not be 100% reliable).
