Several people have replied via E-mail, and told me that if you go into basic & type "PRINT PEEK (64447)" and press return.

it it says 255, you have an OLD iic.
if it says 0  you can do 3.5, but you don't have the memory expansion 
connector.

So I did just that... guess what... I have an old iic.  I contacted an
Authorized Repair shop here in San Diego, and they will fix it for free!!!

Apple is great!
