There have been a few questions about the functionality of a CD-ROM
drive on a GS lately. The answer is:
Yes: Most CD rom drives will at least work as CD-Data drives. The Apple
SCSI cards require drivers, the RamFast just works with them (ROM 3.0
and up for HFS Support).
No: The RamFast does NOT support CD-Audio on any CD-ROM drive with or
without drivers, period. Many third party drives do not support
CD-Audio even on an Apple SCSI card, simply because the drivers do noit
work with the Audio.
The Apple CD-SC (CD-150) WILL work with CD-Audio on a GS with an Apple
SCSI card.
I have not tried the CD-300 on an Apple SCSI card system, maybe I should
hook it up to my other GS system and see what it does with it.
My #1 GS is a ROM 03 with 8Megs, RamFast, 12.5MHz TransWarp, 40Meg HD,
Floptical Drive, 3.5" drive, RGB monitor, and stereo speakers.
My other GS is a ROM 03 with 4 Megs, Apple Hi-Speed SCSI, 8MHz ZIP GS,
43Meg SCSI drive, and RGB Monitor.
Both machines are served by my Mac IIci with 21" Monitor, 24bit Radius
graphics card, 230Meg Apple Hard Drive, 20 Megs RAM, ZyXEL 1496E Modem,
CD-300 External, Archive Viper 150 tape drive, Xerox Flatbed scanner,
AppleTalk ImageWriter LQ with 3 bin sheet feeder, and PostScript
compatible Star Laser Printer4.
I also have a 386-16 4/40 SVGA (Shares the 21" monitor when needed).
I must say that of all the systems, the GS is the absolute nicest to
use, despite its video limitations. I find myself doing almost all of my
work on the Mac, and about the only thing the 386 does is Program some
EPROMs for me when needed.
