  First of all, did you really put a slash in front of the relative pathname?
If so, the first element of path will be treated as the volume name, and
you'll get an error (though it shouldn't be $40).
  Assuming that your example was just a slip up, have you checked that the
name only contains alphanumeric chararcters and periods?  Is each path
element no more than 15 characters long?  Are you using positive ASCII (the
high bit cleared on each character)?  If you've answered no to any of these
questions, that will be the reason for the pathname syntax error.
  (It's been a while since I've looked at code for using ProDOS MLI calls,
but you might also need to ensure the length of the pathname string is
specified correctly).
