I think my RAMFast is dying (again). Here's the story:
- sometimes it boots up fine.
- sometimes I get a RAMFast memory error 0 or 1 (right at the GS
copyright screen).
- sometimes the drive seems to disappear.
I know my memory card is fine, because I can boot from a floppy.
I moved the RAMFast from slot 7 to slot 6, because I thought it might
be getting hot sitting next to the memory card. No change.
If I hold down the zero key when I boot, I get the RAMFast ROM
utilities, but there is no drive listed. If I tell it to search the
SCSI chain for the drive, the RF's version number changes from 3.00k
to 0.00a, and it hangs (I'm willing to chalk up the number change to a
screen mistake when the computer hangs).
So, if the drive is not spinning up properly, would it disappear from
the SCSI chain in the middle of my work? Would the RAMFast hang (in
the ROM utilities) if there's no drive? What if the cable is bad?
Does CVTech still exist? Do they still service their products?
And the funny thing is, I was trying to reply to Jawaid's query about
error fatal error codes when this happened last night....
And my GS still fails the oscillator test sometimes (0C000005)....
Seth ---> thes+@cmu.edu It is not enough to watch.
