PLATINUM IIE CASE SIZE: SAME AS MIDDLE-VINTAGE IIE
--------------------------------------------------
Scott Maxwell (8/11/93) asked whether the case size of the late-model IIe
(platinum IIe with numeric keypad) is the same size as for earlier IIe's.
Answer:
There were three vintages of IIe:
"Early IIe" (1983-84) white characters on brown keycaps
"middle IIe (1984-c87) black characters on brown keycaps, beige case
"platinum IIe" (c1988 to present) black characters on dark grey keycaps,
light grey platinum case, numeric keypad on right
The "middle" and "platinum" cases have identical dimensions and screwhole
placements, so they are perfectly compatible with each other. But the
"early" version is NOT compatible in case size with the latter two versions.
The identity of the latter two versions is known with certainty. My IIe is
a "middle IIe," and I bought a "platinum IIe" main unit on the net. Not wanting
to remove my ZIP CHIP cpu, instead I removed the upper half and swapped the
uppers on the two units, and they fit perfectly above the respective screwholes!
But all the dimensions of the "early model are very different --- the "early"
IIe screwholes will not match. Even the plastic lid of the early model is a
mismatch with either of the later models. The plastic lids for the "middle"
and "platinum" are interchangeable, although their colors differ so if you mix
them you will end up with a (unique) two-tone color scheme .... sebugg
