Re: Printer connection

Regarding Joseph Stein's query regarding which printer to use to type
a dissertation from a IIc:

I would recommend a serial DAISY WHEEL printer. Many graduate schools
will not accept as "letter quality" the output of 9-pin dot-matrix printers
like the Imagewriter or its clones. Daisy wheel printers were the Cadillacs
of the early 1980s -- slow high quality output. Of course, their print
quality is now equaled by laser printers but the cost of a daisy wheel
printer is only a fraction of the cost of a laser. Should mention though
that daisy wheels, because they are impact printers, are as noisy as a
typewriter.

BTW, a person in Greenville SC is selling his wide-carriage serial daisy
wheel printer: a Smith Corona TP-1, for $50.00 plus shipping. He mailed
me a copy of its typed output and it is absolutely first class. This printer
cost about $600 when new in 1983. I was tempted to buy it for use with my
office IIc (which requires a serial printer), but decided against it because
the wide carriage size of the Smith Corona daisy wheel would occupy most of
my desk. If anyone is interested in the TP-1 printer, send me an e-mail
message and I will send you the seller's name and address so that you can
negotiate directly with him. sebugg
