Allow me to answer you in reverse order here.
I have no first hand experience with AMR drives but I do not like what
I've heard about them others may find them great.
I have had Apple's 3.5 HD controller card since they first came out with
it. In fact I got rape by an Apple dealer getting it. That was because I
didn't wait until the price was published on it. What goes around comes
around; Computer Outlet soon died of a horrible death. Although I have
been displeased with Apple draging their feet with a MS DOS FST that can
read & write, the card has worked well. I suggest you don't get rid of
your old drive because A) You might need it for copy protected disks and
B) applictions that don't follow Apple's guide lines. I suggest you leave
your current drives pluged into the smart port and connect your HD
drive(s) to the card. This way you can just use the control panel & a
reboot to switch between the two type drives. That is if you get two HD
drives. It is easier computering with two, if you only get one then you
may want to connect them the way Apple has them in their manual. My way is
not in the manual so use which ever is best for you.
I have had my two AE HD drives as long as the card. I have had no major
problems with them, since I got them. I did hear that AE quit marketing
them as 1.6 drives because they weren't cost efficient to the user that
way. A fellow user here in San Diego had AE HD drives for the Macintosh
that worked fine and cost less money because you didn't get AE's driver
with it, which you don't need for this application anyway. Bottom line is
they cost less then Apple's and they work.
Hope this helps you!! Happy Computering!! Jim
