We don't get the Performa's in Canada, but as I understood it, the ProDOS
System Init is on the IIe emulator installer disk. I think the Performa
400 is the LC III in disguse.

I've tried this and noticed the init writes a file on the disk before
mounting it on the desktop. If you have a full disk it won't mount. I've
also tried this with a SyQuest cartridge with both HFS and ProDOS
partions. As with the 800k disks, it had to write a file called "desktop"
on the disk before mounting.

Note:

Before a Mac can recognize a ProDOS partion, you must make sure that it
was originally partitioned and formatted on a Mac.
