On more than one occasion I've seen this referred to as the "time to buy a
fan" error.  (Of course that explanation doesn't help much since you
already have a fan...)

If you're interested in the technical explanation of what causes this
error...it happens when the ROM tries to send a SYNC command to the ADB
controller, and times out before receiving the proper reply.  When it gets
into this state, several ADB commands besides SYNC also fail (but strangely
enough, the keyboard and the mouse don't seem to be affected).

The general concensus seems to be that this happens because some part
(probably the ADB GLU or the ADB microcontroller) is VERY picky about
temperature, and may or may not work correctly if it's outside its ideal
temperature range.
