Apple2 Archive site/fund

At last I have finished compiling a list of contributors for buying a drive
for a permanent Apple2 archive. 36 persons have graciously donated a total
of $925 towards purchasing a harddrive. Most have been in the $20-25 range,
with a few in the $40-140 range. Yeah! Great going folks!

If anyone (new or procrastinator) would like to help push the fund over
the $1000 mark, please contribute immediately. Make your check or money
order out to Steve Chiang and mail to:

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! The show is about to begin ....

I will order a drive before the end of July.

But grind.isca.uiowa.edu is not waiting for a new drive! As a beginning,
an 'upload' directory has been created in the main 'apple2' directory.
Anonymous FTP uploads should work. E-mail or post problems & suggestions.
I'm considering also putting upload directories in the apple8 and apple16
hierarchy (if I thought people would use the correct one :-) )

Downloads shouldn't work from the 'upload' dir. You can only put things
there. I and assistants will have to put them in the other directories
before you can download. Please leave e-mail for apple2pd@icaen.uiowa.edu
(or apple2pd@isca.uiowa.edu may work too) describing your upload if it is
not obvious what it is or where it belongs. E-mail to steven-nelson@uiowa.edu
will work fine too!

I encourage other apple2 archive sites (like cco.caltech) who need space to
offload their files to the grind.isca upload directory. Then help me
organize this mess! Most current files are binscii files. If true binary
files are uploaded please be sure they are apparent with a .shk ending or
something.

I will keep archiving comp.binaries.apple2 files, so they do not need to be
uploaded if you are also posting the files to cba2. Should *.sdk/shk files
be mixed with binscii files, or put in a special 'binaries' dir in each
directory?

I will post a mini-FAQ on using the grind.isca site soon. As a hint, 2
methods will be descibed. Anonymous FTP, and telnet (rlogin?) or dial-up
to the ISCABBS filesystem [user iscabbs, no password, follow the menus].
I need to experiment a little too, as I always login as a registered user
and haven't used these "public" access methods. You are invited to experiment
along with me :-)

Send contribution $$$ and Apple II Forever!

Since Steve Chiang doesn't have his own e-mail addr yet (that I know of),
you may send e-mail to me, and I'll forward it as best I can. (I do have the
email addr of one of his room-mates).

Thanks to everyone for your generosity and patience.
