You should definitely have a hard drive and at least 2 megs of RAM.
An accelerator is also highly recommended if you want to do any sort of
multitasking. I'm currently running an 8 MHz ZipGS with 16K, so it
isn't scorchingly fast, but it handles GNO quite well.
Usually the very first thing I run when my computer boots into
Prosel-16 is GNO. I can run all my shell-based and desktop-based
programs from GNO. The only time I ever logout is to run ANSITerm since
it uses ProDOS 8. Then it's right back into GNO. Sometimes I don't
even use ANSITerm if all I need is ASCII or VT-100 emulation. Telcom
and 'copycat' (a great James Brookes product) are my two principal GNO
communication utilities. I use 'rz' and 'sz' from GNO to upload and
download using ZModem.
With GNO 1.1, you will be able to "suspend" desktop applications and
return to the shell. For example, here is the "process list" (the list
of tasks currently running on my GS):
ID STATE TT USER TIME COMMAND
1 ready co root 000:00 NullProcess
2 paused 00 root 000:00 init
3 wait 00 root 000:00 (/etc/syserr)
4 wait 00 root 000:00 (/etc/syslog)
62 suspended 02 taob 000:00 copycat .ttyd2 .ttyco
63 suspended 02 taob 000:00 cc-modem
7 paused co taob 000:05 -gsh
64 suspended 02 taob 000:00 cc-console
68 suspended 03 taob 000:02 finder
70 ready co taob 000:01 synthfile -p Fugue
79 waitsigch co taob 000:00 mugs
80 waitsigch co taob 008:12 emacs @/usr/taob/mugs:mugs.rc
82 running co taob 000:00 eps -n -a
It shows that I am running the command to list the processes ("eps
-n -a") while my mail session ("mugs" and "emacs") are being put on
hold. I also have the Finder suspended in the background while I'm
writing this message, plus a "copycat" process keeping a line open to
my UNIX account through the modem. Just to make things interesting,
there is also a synthLAB song playing quietly in the background as I
read my mail and news ("synthfile"). "-gsh" is the command line shell
from which I invoked all these commands. There are also other
processes that keep track of system usage and errors. As you can see,
GNO has no difficulty in juggling all these tasks, and it gives me a
chance to show off my process table to other GNO users. ;-)
Followups directed to comp.sys.apple2.gno.
