Hard drive problem...

I have a 40SC Apple hard drive.  I notice that when it reads or writes to 
certain sections, it makes a loud "clicking" noise, and slows down the read
or write process considerably.  At least I think it happens when it reads
or writes to certain sections.  Could someone please tell me why it is doing
this and how I could possibly solve it?  It has happened before, but now it
is happening MUCH more often.  Thanks in advance for the help!
