HP Deskjet to GS - Parallel Connection

Can anybody help me with getting a HP Deskjet 500 printer working with
Appleworks Classic?

I have it connected to my IIGS via a Orange Micro Grappler Plus parallel
interface card in Slot 1. This setup allows me to print to it from
Graphicwriter, etc using the Harmonie drivers in a very satisfactory manner.
But it would be nice to be able to print from 8 bit Appleworks.

Setting up a custom printer in Appleworks using the available settings
intended for serial connections does not give any response at all. I would
appreciate any help available.
