Q: DeskJet 500C printer escape codes for Color?

Q:  What magic escape/printer codes are used to enable/use the Colors of
    the DeskJet 500C printer?  Particuliarly, how to use the colors in a
    manual mode from programs which do not understand color or DJ but
    which can be taught to manually add magic escape/printer codes.  In
    this particuliar case, want to use AppleWorks from Apple IIgs and
    print simple color to DeskJet 500C.  More details:

Have:
Apple IIgs with prodos 2.0.
Deskjet 500C.
Appleworks.

Am getting:
Driver for gs/os and additional gs/os program to run driver (?).
This is a generic(?) printer(?) driver program which downloads fonts(?).

**Want**:
To use the DeskJet *color* capabilities with the Appleworks software.
It is OK to have only "simple" (e.g. RGYB) color capabilities and to have
to do "manual" tasks to make this work.

Guesses:
It is possible to "manually" use printer codes (escape codes?) in the
same way as using other fonts from within Appleworks (and printer
driver?) software to support simple color usage with the DJ500C.  If
so, needs the magic printer (escape?) codes for color output on DJ500C
and any additional hints on how to make this work.
