i've got a hdsc 20, and i've never seen any such problem. mine has a
rodime 3.5" mechanism, i know some of them have st225N mechanisms. the
rodime mechanism was actually recalled, but the seagate drive never worked
for me, so i wouldn't let the dealer take the rodime back.
i _think_ the problem was with the old rom A on my scsi card, but once i
had the rev C rom, the seagate was long gone.
