I don't see any general reason why not.
There is one obvious difference between an external SuperDrive and an
external 800k drive: the SuperDrive has a much larger "lump" on its
cable, at the drive end. This may be some kind of noise filter, since
the SuperDrive sends data at a higher rate when in 1.44 MB mode.
I haven't taken apart my SuperDrive to see if the internals are
identical (in terms of case mounting, etc.) I would be surprised if
there were any differences.
