Maybe AWGS added some "invisible" control chars into these two lines. I
would try the following method: copy everything before these two lines
into a new document, then the text past them. Put both pieces together
and you're happy (or not).

Or: can't you rewrite the paper so that the two lines fit nicely into
the context of the article??? :-)
