We have had some people with hard disk problems on this newsgroup. The most common
reasons for these problems were (are):
1. SCSI bus termination.
Because your hard disk the the only device on the SCSI bus (except the SCSI card),
your hard disk must have a bus termination. Some drives are internally terminated, 
some are not. 
2. supply of terminator power.
Some drives expect the terminator power to be supplied by the SCSI card. I don't 
know if the old Apple SCSI card can do this.

If your cable has worked with your old hard disk, there shouldn't be a reason
not to work with a new drive. 
Yes, there is a standard for this cable. Please, read the FAQs (part 2) of this
newsgroup. There's a whole topic about SCSI that might also help you with your
problem.
