OK, David, I'll bite.

Not development tools, but an Apple II. Sheez you say.
"We are not going to do to the Mac what we did to the Apple II ..."
is a quotable quote that comes to mind.
We now know from the PowerPC's highly publicized Mac emulation demos
that Apple is serious about meeting that objective. The trades say
that Apple has contracted with a third party to provide a softPC for
the PowerPC that willl allow Apple to tap into the PC market. Why not
a softII also at speeds even a zipped GS can't attain? A II emulation
would be easy (a Cray + David Lyons + Matt Deathrage could do wonders)
and cheap (little R&D $$$). Unlike the Mac, Apple wouldn't need to do
a lot of tweaking to get an emulation that exceeds current performance
levels. And we mustn't forget that Apple _has_ _to_ provide the
educational market with an upgrade path to the new platform if it wants
to continue being a player in that market. Don't want to make the same
mistake again, do we?
So, could it be that Apple is going to try to lure back the alienated
Apple II customer base by providing Apple IIe/IIgs emulation in the
PowerPC? Makes sense to me. But then, Apple doesn't always do the
sensible thing.
After all, the PC601 is a transition machine.
You heard it here, first.
