Apple IIe Revision B Upgrade

I bought an old Apple IIe system last weekend -- so old that it had the original
Apple II Plus-style thick plastic case and white keycaps, but it was otherwise
in great condition.  The first thing I noticed was that it had a revision A
motherboard (the serial number ended with "-A"), but it had been enhanced and
had an Extended 80-Column card.  The odd thing was that it ran double hi-res
graphics just fine, but I took it in to the dealer for the upgrade anyway.  The
dealer put in a new motherboard, fresh out of the box from Apple, but it too has
a serial number ending with "-A"!  What's going on here?  Is Apple recycling all
those motherboards that they took back for the upgrade plan?
