You don't have to connect to crash if you can find another system in your
area. Also, it's now possible to telnet into crash. So, if you have a local
9600 dialup that will let you telnet, you can connect to crash without paying
long distance. Of course, the best solution would be to get a feed directly
from whoever is providing that 9600 bps dialup.

How much you spend depends on how many newsgroups you want to carry. If you
just get proline newsgroups, it would probably be very cheap. Long distance
calls cost about 10-11 cents/minute (night rates) no matter where you're
calling (within the US). I've been getting about a megabyte a day, which
costs me around $80/month in long distance. Now that I'm telnetting into
crash, I'm only paying $15/month.
