There is no cheap way :-(
The Apple ][ and IBM use a (very) different recording scheme on the disks.
I have heard of a hardware modification for IBM drives to read apple disks,
but it was buyware.
The transfer via serial port is quite fine. Try to get a Super Serial Card
(buy it or ask a friend).
