8 pin? You mean 16 pin IC socket near the right rear (when you're facing
the machine as if you were about to type on ir)? Yes, that's it.
Apple joysticks have the appropriate connector.

You must run a wire from either of the shift keys (you'll have to solder
this onto the keyboard), and run it to the game connector. There are
extra wires in the keyboard cable that can be used. At the game connector
end it gets connected to the highest numbered bit input "PB2".
Later Apple software will automatically recognise it there. This fixes
the input portion.
You also need to replace the video output PROM. On later boards, this is
pin-for-pin compatible with the standard 2716 EPROM so you can make up
your own char set. Otherwise, you'll need to buy the dang thing, or jimmy
some pins around.
