If you can find an AE Ramkeeper (it is not made anymore), this is a board
that, while not having any memory of its own, takes two cards piggy-back
(one front, one rear).
The front card (assuming full-size) will block slot 7, or with the optional
slot-mover, will block slots 4 & 5. This isn't a problem for me since my
vulcan is "pseudo-slotted"; it thinks it's in slot seven where it is actually
in slot 5. If your front card is anything but an AE brand, you need the slot
mover.
The card is battery-backed, and can have a portion of itself seen as a
ROM-disk. I find this very useful to use as /tmp. While you can do it,
I wouldn't recommend using the ROM disk as your boot volume, mainly because
it is a waste of RAM.
The battery is a GEL-cell (not nicad) and can remain fully charged without
degredation. I've had the same one in my system since 1988 and have not
had any problems. The battery is also external (about 2"x1"x6").
The card is DMA compatible, even if your mounted cards are not. Either or
both cards can be up to 8Meg, although the GS can only address up to 8Meg
total, and only the first 4Meg (I understand) can be DMA.
The only incompatibility I have found is with the Applied Ingenuity
GS Juice+ card; it can be the only card on the Ramkeeper.
If you have a question of compatibility with a specific RAM card, ask and
I'll look it up. I hope this helps.
