Just hold down ^Z after starting it.  All the screen thrashing will stop.

As a side-note, I wouldn't do communications w/ShellPlay playing at greater
than 1200 baud or so; I got massive character loss on my system (Zip 7/8, 
direct serial ISN hookup) at higher speeds, and Rich Wifall (TWGS/SupraFAX)
had similar results.
