platinum IIe: upper swap
CAN A PLATINUM IIE CASING BE MOUNTED OVER
AN "EARLY IIE" MOTHERBOARD??????
=========================================
Apple made three styles of IIe:
Old version: beige case, white letters on brown keys
Middle version: beige case, black letters on brown keys
latest version: platinum grey case, numeric keypad right of keyboard, enhanced
My home computer is a "middle version," and it has an 8MHz ZIP CHIP installed.
I recently acquired a "platinum IIe" as a spare, but since this has the numeric
keypad I wish to use this as my main computer and retire the "middle IIe" to
a closet -- IT will become the spare.
Because I am reluctant to remove and reinsert the ZIP CHIP to the platinum
motherboard, instead I want to lift off the top plastic casings and switch
them between the two computers. This maneuver will eliminate any need to
remove the ZIP chip. TWO QUESTIONS:
QUESTION ONE: Will the screw mounts, etc. for the "middle IIe" and the
"platinum IIe" be exactly compatible so that the plastic upper sections
can be switched between the "middle IIe" and the "platinum IIe"?
[Yes, I realize that I can just try it and see, but it will be a major
operation to remove seven interface cards, etc. to answer this one
empirically.]
QUESTION TWO: Will the keyboards be compatible with the different
motherboards between these two models? I note that the keyboard must
plug into a flat multipin socket "J17" which appears identical on the
two motherboards and in each instance is labeled "J17." Yes, somehow
the platinum IIe somehow must multiplex the signals from the numeric
keypad into the same number of conductors. BOTH versions had a small
motherboard-socket labeled as "KEYPAD," but neither actually uses it --
not even the platinum IIe with the keypad built on.
Those are the main questions. As a follow-up, are there any other
complications that can be anticipated with this swap?? Thanks. sebugg
