UDC with Unidisk 3.5??

                        CAN LASER UDC CARD OPERATE UNIDISK 3.5" DRIVE?
                        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

       My IIe at home operates an Applied Engineering 800K 3.5" drive
on a Laser UDC card, perfectly. My IIc at the college operates a
Unidisk 800K 3.5" drive, perfectly.

       Today I tried the AE drive with the IIc and it did NOT work:
the manual eject button on the AE drive did not function, and the
computer did not recognize that the drive was connected. I brought the
AE drive home and connected it again to the IIe.

       My question is: Can the Laser Universal Disk Controller card
(UDC) operate the Unidisk 3.5?? An article in NIBBLE magazine (Dec 1986)
claims that it will, but before placing this drive at risk I solicit the
comments of readers. (That same Dec 1986 article stated falsely that the
Laser UDC card will operate Mac-compatible 800K drives; I've tried two
Mac-clone drives and neither one worked well with the UDC.)

       My inquiry about using the Unidisk 3.5 with the UDC card arises
because I am thinking about using a IIe at the office rather than my present
IIc --- I have a spare UDC card which could be used with the Unidisk drive
if compatibility is confirmed. Stephen Buggie sebugg@presby.edu
