One other point: you don't get documentation on how to make shell
calls unless you buy ORCA/M.

You can make shell calls from ORCA/C and Pascal, but no documentation
on the shell interface is supplied (unless they've added it to the
manuals in v2.0).  You can guess some of it by looking at the
interface files, but the ORCA/M manual comes in very handy for
details.
