The ][gs is greatly limited by the 1Mhz bus speed. Not anymore, AE finally
confirmed us today, that the expansion pins on original Transwarp GSes are in
fact QuickRing compatible! That means transfer rate of 50mb+/sec. folks.
Majority of Mac QuickRing cards will plug in and work fine, although we need to
convince the developers to patch it to work with the up coming Apple ][gs
System 7 ( a.k.a GS/OS v5.0 ). C.V. Tech is said to be developeing RamFAST QR.
It will fully support the SCSI-2 standard, including FAST and WIDE. A
386SX-40Mhz is used to keep things running smoothly. Watch for it in 2Q94.
AE announced today, a new accelerator board you the Apple ][gs computer. It
contains the new Sanyo/WDC 65c816 running 20Mhz. And does it at the stock 5.0v
supplied by the regular power supply. The board contains 128k of 15ns SRAM
cache to boost performance, and is said to be running at 6 or 8 times the
normal ][gs speed. Of course, it includes the QuickRing port still. AE will
not offer an upgrade from the original Transwarp GS. It will be ready in 4Q93.
RezTek is also looking to the possibility of using the QuickRing connection in
TurboREZ ][. Plans are to use the i860 as the co-processor, full 32bit color -
24bit true color and 8bit for alpha channels. Standard resolution will be
1280x1024x32bit. 4mb 60ns VRAM standard. Support for HDTV resolutions
~2000x~1200 can be done by adding more VRAM. 8mb is the max. RezTek plans to
license Apple's QuickDraw GX for use with TurboREZ ][. RezTek didn't give any
futhur details. It is scheduled to be released to Apple ][gs software
developers for evaluation in 2Q94, and possibly for release by 3Q94.
