If this was with FTP, the default transfer mode should _always_ be ASCII.
When you change it, the new transfer mode is communicated to the other end
automatically (this doesn't happen with Kermit, which is really annoying).
I have never seen an FTP server that defaulted the transfer mode to binary.
Perhaps your local FTP program has changed?
