Yeah, I've did a lot of research on this to try to hook up a GS (then
when the money got cut -- skreee!!)
(1)st: Does the //c have an appletalk port? I don't think so, but w/o it
I don't think you can do anything especially cool.
...But with the //e, now, all you need is an Apple ][ Workstation card
(like $149 I think...) This, I BELIEVE, includes software, and a card
which is essentially a stripped-down serial printer/modem card. Actually,
I guess you COULD do this with a //c, you'd just need the software....
Anyway, things are a little more complex on the Mac end. You need a bunch
of connectors and terminators, for one thing. PhoneNET is cheap, but
since you're going between two computers, it might not be worth it. As
for software on the mac end, you just need to make (a) A prodos partition
on your hard drive, and (b) to install software which will recognize you
apple // on startup, ie boot appleworks. This comes with the appletalk
server kit, which you would have to buy. (Yes, expensive, esp with two
system...) You could always hack the software....
If you don't have the money or processing power to turn your mac into a
dedicated server, you can use the built-in networking of System 7. (As
oposed to the network software on the mac = Appleshare) This will not let
you boot directly (with your //e) off the network, but you can use your
mac more easily (you can also use the mac with AppleShare 3.0 under
System 7, but why spend all the money?) For this, you just use the File
Sharing windows in 7.

I know I'm not much of a manual writer, but you can get a lot of very
specific data from the may 1992 edition of A2-Central, where most of this
came from. Good luck!
