    Would this benefit high-speed background transfers (say, under GNO)?
Rather than having to service the serial port every tick, the process
would only need to check every second or so and grab everything in the
64K buffer at once.  It still takes a (relatively) long time to fill the
whole buffer (17 seconds at a theoretical 38400 bps).  I'm assuming that
the serial chip shuffles the stuff into the buffer, and not the main CPU.
