What is a failure?

I don't seem to remember anyone ever saying that the Avatar would be the 
machine for everyone. For that matter, the Apple II is not the machine for 
everyone. For that matter, no machine is really a machine for everyone.The 
Avatar, from what I can tell, seems to be a hacker's machine. Its design 
specs indicate that the user will be able to poke around with its 
internals, just like the firist Apple ][.

If it's supposed to be a hacker's machine, and hackers enjoy it, how can 
it be a failure?
