the correct address is ftp.uu.net, as in ftp ftp.uu.net.  like apple
is ftp.apple.com.......

btw, the machine seems to be set up with a very particular anonymous
login - it wanted the full machine name, as opposed to
sk2f@andrew.....

  seth ---> sk2f@andrew.cmu.edu
