To both people who are having trouble with System 6 (HFS in
particular): have you tried re-installing the system software, using
the five disk set?  Run the Installer, use Custom Installation, and
reinstall all the appropriate options.

One particular problem is installing AppleWorks GS _after_ installing
System 6.  It seems that AppleWorks GS replaces some of the system
files with ones from its own system disk, which is only System 5.0.2.
Having a mixed set of files leads to very bad behaviour, to say the least.
