It seems that the original ROM is by far the most common one in New
Zealand, and possibly Australia as well. Perhaps the local EPSON
agents never went to the trouble of announcing and/or arranging ROM
upgrades, unlike in the USA.

Anyway, the symptom of the problem: if you try to print to the EPSON
APL card (original ROM) with any version of AppleWorks (unpatched),
nothing gets printed, and AppleWorks zips through the data in a couple
of seconds (as if the printer was accepting every character without any
delays). With the patch installed, the card works properly.

I found some information in my user group's magazine about how to
patch AppleWorks 1.1 and 1.2 to work with the card; it also had
incorrect information about how to patch 1.3.

The person for whom I doing this has a patched copy of AppleWorks 2.0.
It turns out that the patch is exactly the same as for 1.1 and 1.2.
I've located the appropriate location in 3.0, and will try applying
the patch tomorrow.

The patch only changes six bytes. It seems that the code in the
routine in question hasn't ever changed, since the patch contains two
branch instructions, the offsets for which are the same in all
versions of AppleWorks.
